3D Objects from Recycled Materials

This instructable is part of "something out of nothing" series, this time "nothing" is material - recycled paper, banana skins and more. I've actually came across this idea, making sheets of paper for my art and soon realised that I get left over pulp, which goes to waste and could be used to make other things. This is how I started making 3D paper objects, that are not just nice to look at, but can be useful too and actually more fun to make. 

Materials:

recycled paper
banana skins (optional)
grasses, flower pedals (optional) 

Tools:

blender

There are countless objects to be made of paper pulp. Some suggestions: cup for organising pencils or bowl for coins and other small items; make the lid and here's a great box for jewellery and other stuff that need to be protected from dust. Balls on rope could be useful for making christmas decorations.

Stop Quicktime and Preview from Auto-Restoring What You Left Open

OS X: Auto-restore works great when you want to pick back up where you left off working, but how many times do you leave open a photo or video you actually want to see again when you re-open Preview or Quicktime? A couple of terminal commands can disable this annoying—and potentially embarrassing—feature of OSX.

Enter this into Terminal to fix Preview:

defaults write com.apple.Preview NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

And this one for Quicktime:

defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false

That's it! Just change false to true at the end of both statements to bring back auto-restore.

Address Debt Collectors Head On to Make Them Stop Harassing You

When a debt collector comes calling, they may try to use intimidating tactics or pose as a government official to scare you into cooperating. If you do have an outstanding debt, you should work with them to get it paid off, but you can do it on your terms. Our friends at Marketplace have some tips for doing just that.

You don't have to be a terrible person to run afoul of a debt collector—an overdue parking ticket in another state, a utility bill that was never closed out, sometimes it's not your fault, but you do have to take care of it. Marketplace offers a few tips to help you deal with harassing debt collectors, but a few stood out to us.

First of all, they suggest dealing with debt collectors head on. Avoiding their calls and messages won't make them go away, so just demand they identify themselves appropriately (by law, debt collectors cannot represent themselves as a government agency or law enforcement—they have to tell you who they are and what company they work for) before you hand over any potentially sensitive personal information. Also by law, a debt collection agency has to inform you of your right to dispute, and respect it. They can't just tell you "it's too late for that," or that you'd have to work out a dispute with the original debtor—they have to work the dispute on your behalf.

Finally, if you're being harassed by a bad debt collector, Jack Brown, president of Gulf Coast Collection Bureau in Sarasota, Fla, offered some recourse:

"The perception of debt collectors is that there's a bunch of pit bulls out there who will beat up consumers, talk to them rudely, yell at them, lie to them — do whatever they can to get a dollar out of them today," says Brown. "In any industry there are bad apples, bad actors, and there's 99 percent of the folks out there doing the right thing. They are out there complying with the laws and they are working. But there is that 1 percent out there that may cause some issues. If you ever deal with that type of agency go to AskDoctorDebt.com, get some information on what you rights are, what you can expect during a collection call, how you can get the calls to stop if they're not treating you in the right away. ACAInternational.org, that's our international trade association for debt collectors and you can also submit a complaint against an agency through that site if you have an issue."

chickpea tacos

Chickpea tacos are super tasty and come together in less than 10 minutes! They're pretty filling, too.

I've seen versions online where you bake the chickpeas, but I don't care for them in tacos when they get too crunchy and hard. So this is my shortcut version of chickpea tacos that does not involve heating up my apartment by using the oven forever. :D

(it is May and currently 75 in my apartment and it's nearly midnight. the oven is out of the question. :P)

Minbox Offers Super-Fast File Sharing and Cloud Storage

Mac: Minbox is a new file sharing service that's fast, free, and lets you upload files of any size and any type so you can send them to friends. Best of all, it does it all without forcing you to wait for the upload to finish before you can share the file and get back to work.

The video above (mildly nsfw lyrics, btw) highlights Minbox's major benefit: speed. Dropbox and other cloud storage services require you wait until the file you want to share has uploaded and finished syncing before you can grab a link and send it to someone to download or view. Minbox on the other hand lets you drag and drop the file right on the menubar app, enter an email address, and fire your download link to a friend while the file finishes uploading in the background. They promise upload speeds twice as fast as Dropbox, thanks to their own compression and conversion technology.

The other big feature Minbox brings to the table is the ability to upload any file of any size that you want to share. Upload whatever you want, and the file is hosted on their servers for 30 days before it's automatically deleted. It's less of a cloud storage service with dedicated space for just your files, and more of a fast, easy-to-use file sharing service. It's available now for OS X as a menubar utility from the Mac app store.

Beyond that, the service supports multiple concurrent uploads, scheduled sharing, supports RAW photo files, and if you do upload photos, the service can make beautiful web galleries so your recipient can browse them before downloading. Eventually Minbox will offer premium plans with dedicated storage like Dropbox or other cloud storage lockers, but right now they're fast, free, and just want to help you send large files quickly.
