Easily Migrate Your Gmail to a Non-Gmail Email with a Script

Easily Migrate Your Gmail to a Non-Gmail Email with a Script

Google has a great built in service to transfer your email to a new Gmail account, but it only works with Gmail. If you're taking your email somewhere else, tech blog Digital Inspiration created a script to make the transfer process easy.

Digital Inspiration uses a Google Script to accomplish the task. When it runs, it forwards all your email from your current Gmail account to your new address. It's not a perfect solution, but it's better than nothing. Head over to Digital Inspiration for the full guide.

Boomerang for Gmail Schedules Emails with Its New Android App

Boomerang for Gmail Schedules Emails with Its New Android App

Android: Boomerang, the Gmail app and extension that allows you to schedule emails for a later date and time, has come out with its own dedicated app for Android.

The app offers a few options above and beyond what Google's offering provides. In addition to being able to schedule emails, you can also snooze received messages and track responses to emails you've sent. Boomerang works with Gmail and Google Apps accounts, but unfortunately it doesn't support any other email clients just yet.

How to Bring Back the Delete Button in the New Gmail for Android

How to Bring Back the Delete Button in the New Gmail for Android

If you've updated to the new Gmail app for Android, you'll see there's a lot to love about it. One little quirk however is that the delete button is gone from the toolbar, leaving you only with options to archive, "mark as unread," and "move to" a folder. Here's how to get the delete button back.

As it stands, you have to press the menu button on your phone to bring up additional options, and "Delete" is right at the top of that menu. That's fine, but here's how to get the trash can back on your toolbar:

Press the menu button on your phone, and select settings from the pop-up menu.Tap "General Settings," then tap "Archive & Delete actions" at the top of the menu.Next, you'll see a pop-up menu with "Show archive only," "Show delete only," and "Show archive & delete." Archive only is the default. Select the one you prefer. I like "Show archive & delete," because options are good things to have.Press the back button to go back to your message view. That's all there is to it. Then end result is the image you see on the right above. The "move to" folder icon has been bumped off, and the trash can is back. One important thing to note—the new version of the app lets you swipe a message to archive or delete it from your inbox. If you select "Show archive & delete," swiping will archive messages (this is the default behavior, so you're not missing anything). If you want swiping to delete messages, you'll have to go back and choose "Show delete only."

Granted, most of us probably just archive everything in Gmail anyway—with so much space, there's little need to delete. However, if you get as much mail as I do, sometimes you just want to trash something and save the space.

Update: Reader Brian over at Google+ reminds us that if you want to swipe to delete, go back to General Settings and check the option to "swipe to delete." That's right, it's a stand-alone setting option now, but at least it's easy to find!

Gmail for Android Adds New Inbox and Slide-Out Navigation

Android: Gmail just got a new update with a brand new inbox featuring labels, contact images, and indicators for your promotional, update, and social notifications. Additionally, new slide-out navigation makes it easy to access whatever you need when you need it.

Google plans to roll out this update slowly over the next few weeks, but Android Police grabbed the APK and you can download it now from their site.

GText Syncs Your Android's Text Messages Directly with Gmail

Chrome: Although Gmail can already send and receive text messages, it doesn't sync with your Android smartphone. Gtext, an extension from previously mentioned MightyText, sends and receives texts directly in Gmail using your mobile phone number. Since DeskSMS might not be taking new users, this is a great alternative just in time.

Just like MightyText—rightfully billed as the iMessage of Android—every SMS (and MMS) you send from Gmail syncs up with your smartphone (presuming you have the Android app installed, too). The interface works just like chat in Gmail, only you're actually sending text messages. You also get a handy "Compose SMS" button right beneath the standard email compose button you're used to. If you already have MightyText installed, you'll get up and running in about 10 seconds. If not, installing the app won't take much longer. For those of you who spend a lot of time in Gmail and hate switching to your phone to text, this Chrome extension is a must-install.
