A Minimalist Workspace for Two

A Minimalist Workspace for Two

You don't have to bog down your workspace with complexity to make it functional. Often a clean desktop with just the right tools does the trick, just as executive coach Dea McKenzie and creative director Jorge Naranjo chose to do in today's featured workspace.

Of course, a little clutter helps some people get things done. Dea explains how she and Jorge made their "odd couple" working styles function side by side:

Jorge and I work very differently. He’s an extreme minimalist, and I need some “work stuffs” (aka, clutter) to keep me focused on the task at hand. We strive to be mostly paperless, which is fairly easy if you have large or multiple monitors. Our built-in cabinetry allows us to store design and other resource books, as well as office supplies and our printer.

If you have a workspace of your own to show off, share them with us by posting it to your personal Kinja blog using the tag featured workspace or adding it to our Lifehacker Workspace Show and Tell Flickr pool. Photos must be at least at least 640x360 and please include information about what you used, how you came up with the design, and any other relevant details. If your awesome workspace catches our eye, you might get featured!

The Clipboard Workspace

A great, compact workspace makes use of the wall because when you can't build out, build up. Matthew Pierce (of Matt's Macintosh) records most of his videos at this desk, which decorates the walls in a practical way: with clipboards.

Not only can clipboards hold important information, design references, and any other paper-based item, but they look nice when arranged in a grid and hung on the wall. This choice adds personality to practicality, making it a really great way to both design and use the walls.

The Android-Themed, Chalkboard Workspace at Google HQ

The Android-Themed, Chalkboard Workspace at Google HQ

Google recently hosted a company competition for its Googlers to spiff up their shared workspaces. This is the winning solution, which incorporates chalkboard paint, greenery, and, of course, Android accessories.

A long box planter filled with succulents makes for a great divider, and the charcoal and Android green color scheme adds a nice vibe. You could copy a few of these ideas for your own workspace (if, for example, you had a desk surface you wouldn't mind covering in chalkboard paint). More pics and details can be found in the Apartment Therapy link below.

If you have a workspace of your own to show off, share them with us by: a) posting it in the discussion below, attaching your image to the post, b) posting it to your personal Kinja blog using the tag featured workspace, or c) adding it to our Lifehacker Workspace Show and Tell Flickr pool. Make sure any photos you include are at least 640x360. Keeping them to 16:9 helps, too! Include a little text about the stuff you used, how you came up with the design, and any other relevant details. If your clever organization and good design sense catches our eye, you might be the next featured workspace.

The Modular Workspace

The Modular Workspace

Today's featured workspace is a clean, open desk. The desk itself isn't modular, as you might expect from the workspace name, but the organization and use of the gadgetry is.

Flickr user AFGdesign set up his desk with voice-activated gadgets at the ready. His Nexus 7 sits on a self-made plaster stand beside his HP Probook 4530s (running both Chromium and Windows 8). He says he usually has Google Now open so he can just say "Google" and do a voice search. He also hacked an IKEA spring-loaded arm lamp to hold his iPod (using the original plastic holder that came in the box)—for quick Siri commands—and two pens (using strong magnets). Finally, he uses a CD rack to hold his pens and the iPod charging wire.

The space looks very simple, but it's also well customized. (By the way, that's a plaster sculpture of an elbow AFGdesign made.) The lamp arm means he can easily move everything out of the way:

I like to keep an open desk and have everything at arms reach. This is how I work every day. You may notice that I dont have any papers, this is because I bring to my desk the paper I need for what I'm going the work on, the rest stays out of the way.

Sounds like our kind of guy.

The Farm Table Workspace

A long desk made with cedar planks and recycled wood. A sun-filled window. And plenty of plants. Today's featured workspace is warm, rustic, and unique.

Donna at Funky Junk Interiors takes salvage items and turns them into inspiring items. That's certainly the case with this 12-foot long, 3-foot deep desk. Besides the loose cedar planks for the top, 4x4 pallet oak posts serve as the legs and chunky reclaimed 2x4's make up the sturdy framing. Black accents, including rolling file carts, a built-in computer pad, and, yes, that cat in the window, round out the rest of the space. Hit up the link below for more shots of this nature-inspired workspace.

The Windowside Workspace

You'll rarely end up with a poor workspace if you include an organized desk, a good chair, only the tools you need for work, and an abundance of natural light. Designers Ryan Meis and Sarah Labieniec created an excellent space on those simple principles.

For those of you wondering where to grab the flip clock screensaver on their computer, you can find it here.
