This Infographic Guides You to Healthy, Tasty Baking Substitutions

This Infographic Guides You to Healthy, Tasty Baking Substitutions

Whether you're trying to cut down on white flour or sugar, or you're just looking for some creative substitutions for better baking, this guide from our friends at Greatist will help you cut the sugar, wheat, or even the fat from your baked goods if you want to.

Regardless of your opinions on what should or shouldn't be part of a healthy diet, this guide probably has a substitution or two you can agree with (and a few you might not). For example, cup for cup, skim milk could be used in place of heavy cream, or bananas in the place of oil or butter. Similarly, you could use a cup of unsweetened applesauce for a cup of sugar (although the graphic warns you that you'll introduce moisture with applsauce, so for every cup used you should reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe by 1/4 cup overall). If you're cutting wheat flour from your diet, 1/3 cup of coconut flour or every cup of wheat flour works wonders in pancakes, cookies, or cakes.

Check out the full graphic below, and make note of the caveats to each substitution where they apply. Like we said, not all of them will be useful to all diets, but there are plenty of them, so you're likely to find one that works for you.

Eater Guides You to the Best Places in Your Town to Eat or Drink

Eater Guides You to the Best Places in Your Town to Eat or Drink

Android (4.0+)/iOS (5.0+): Food and restaurant review blog Eater just unveiled a mobile app that helps you find the hottest spots in your town for dinner or drinks. The app features a top-down map view of your location, and pinpoints for Eater-suggested and reviewed restaurants and bars near you.

The app uses your phone's GPS to figure out where you are, and then shows you all of the restaurants and nightspots that Eater has reviewed nearby. Tap any one of them to see photos, read a snippet of the review (along with a link to read more), and quick buttons to call the restaurant or get turn-by-turn directions there. The app is fast, and while it's ad-supported, it's totally free.

Our friends at Eater sent the app over to us, and it's a great tool to find an excellent place to eat, without the clutter and overwhelming options you'll naturally get with an app like Yelp or FourSquare, which aims to give you all of the nearby options. The downside of course is that you'll only find results in the two-dozen cities where Eater has on-the-street reviewers and reporters. If you live in or near one however, the app is worth a look. Grab it at the links below.

Spotify Discover Guides You to New Music Based on People You Follow

Web: Spotify's radio feature already tries to suggest bands and artists based on the ones you like, but Discover suggests new music to you based on the people you follow. Your recommendations will be packed with playlists, songs, and artists your friends enjoy that you may not have tried.

Spotify has one of the web's biggest databases of streaming music, and while it's always had things like shared playlists and the ability to see what your friends are listening to, Discover is a more direct take on music discovery. It takes things a step further and tries to combine truly useful suggestions with playlists and artists that your friends have recently enjoyed.

If you're worried that you'll get stuck with a bunch of suggestions you'll hate because you and your friends have different tastes in music, don't worry: Spotify says that the recommendations you'll see take a number of things into consideration, not just what your friends are listening to. To try Discover, head over to Spotify's web player—it's only available on the web right now (partially because it's supposed to replace Spotify's home page eventually) and will make its way to the desktop and mobile apps soon.
