Skitch Updates with Neater Annotations, Faster Screenshots, and More

OS X: Evernote has updated its screengrabbing and image annotation tool, Skitch, with more precise annotations, an adjustable canvas, and other improvements.

As the image above shows, you can now draw precise lines at 45-degree angles and create perfect squares and circles by holding down the Shift key while drawing. Shapes can also be more precise now, thanks to a lower minimum size (great for when you need to circle a tiny element in the image).

Now you can also extend the canvas to add annotations next to the image or screenshot. The canvas will automatically expand when you start typing in the margins of the image to give you more space or you can set an amount to stretch the canvas.

Besides the shape and canvas features, Skitch now saves images as special re-editable PNG files. This means you or someone you're working with can reopen the image in Skitch to adjust the annotations.

Finally, Skitch will let you get straight to annotating if you deselect the new option in the app's preferences to "Show advanced options after a screen snap."

Moment Simplifies Posting Photos and Status Updates to Facebook

OS X: Moment lives in your Mac's menu bar and provides a stupidly simple method of checking Facebook status updates and posting your own. It's also one of the best ways we've seen to upload your photos.

When you click Moment in your menu bar, you get notifications from Facebook. Choosing one takes you to its page so you can reply, like, or share it. You can also post your own updates quickly from the app. While convenient, this doesn't add anything we haven't seen before. How Moment handles photo uploads, however, sets it apart. You can add a photo to any status update easily by dragging it to the menu bar. If you drag several photos, however, you get album creation tools. I've used a ton of Facebook photo uploading apps and many of them failed to operate as designed or provided few options (like things as simple as creating and album). Many uploaded albums I couldn't even edit afterwards. Moment, on the other hand, handles this all through in an instant without taking up space on your desktop.

If you want a quick way to interact with Facebook and only visit the site when necessary, Moment will get the job done. Although $4 is a bit pricey for a menubar app, alternatives just don't work as well. Hopefully we'll see a price reduction in the future, but if you like what Moment can do it's a small price to pay.

Stop Windows from Restarting Your Computer After Updates

Sometimes, Windows downloads important updates and decides it's going to restart your computer whether you like it or not. Here's how to disable that behavior.

This has been part of Windows for a long time, and while Microsoft tried to fix it in Windows 8, the annoyance still remains. When you see that screen that says your computer's going to restart in 15 minutes, you just grit your teeth and accept it.

But, there's actually an easy way to fix this—and it works in Windows 7, too. You just need to make a small tweak to the registry:

Head to the Start menu or screen and type "regedit" (no quotes). Start the Registry Editor that pops up.Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AUOn many computers, you won't see the "WindowsUpdate" key. To create it, right-click on the "Windows" key in the sidebar and go to New > Key. Name the key WindowsUpdate, then right-click on that key and create a new one called AU.Click on the AU key and, in the right pane, right-click on the empty space and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.Name the new DWORD: NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsersDouble-click on the new DWORD and give it a value of 1.Reboot your machine and from now on, Windows will not force you to reboot after installing updates. Of course, when you install updates, you should still reboot your computer—and that responsibility is now on you—but this makes sure Windows doesn't catch you by surprise.Again, this registry key has been around for a long time, and should work in Windows 7 as well (but we thought it was worth revisiting for Windows 8).
