Noteworthy+ Is a Free, Keyboard Driven Notes App for Your Menubar

Noteworthy+ Is a Free, Keyboard Driven Notes App for Your Menubar

Mac: You won't find a shortage of notes apps for the Mac of all shapes and sizes. Noteworthy+ isn't all that different, but it sits in the menubar, comes with handy keyboard shortcuts, and is completely free.

Noteworthy+ isn't packed with a lot of features like syncing or various themes. Instead, it keeps things simple with just a few settings and options. You can create a new note, add some formatting, and that's about it. The whole app can be used with keyboard shortcuts, so it's easy to navigate without futzing about in menus. Noteworthy+ certainly isn't for everyone, but it's worth a look if you just need a simple and free notes app that lives in your menubar.

Enable Text Expansion in the Stock Google Keyboard

Enable Text Expansion in the Stock Google Keyboard

Android: There have already been some pretty great text expansion apps for Android. However, if you're using the stock Android keyboard, you don't need to look any farther than Settings.

Technically, the feature is hidden under "Personal dictionary." Here you can enter your own terms, as well as find the ones you've already added. When you edit/create a new word or phrase, though, you have the option to create a shortcut. Once you set up the shortcut, your expanded words will appear as autocorrect suggestions as you type the shortcut phrase.

Logitech Easy-Switch Keyboard Pairs with Multiple Bluetooth Devices

Logitech Easy-Switch Keyboard Pairs with Multiple Bluetooth Devices

When you have a computer, a tablet, and a media center, you might have three keyboards for each. The Logitech Bluetooth Easy-Switch Keyboard, however, can pair with all three so you only need a single input device.

Logitech's Easy-Switch Keyboard offers three different Bluetooth pairing buttons so you can quickly switch the keyboard between different devices as needed. Whether you want to just switch just between phones and tablets or add your computer into the mix, you can. The keyboard itself somewhat mirrors Apple's Bluetooth Keyboard in its size and chiclet key style, but adds function to that form. If you like Apple's keyboards but want something with a little more functionality, you should check this one out. While it may cost a little more than your average keyboard, since it can effectively take the place of three it isn't a bad deal when used as designed.

Move Between Gmail's New Tabs with Keyboard Shortcuts

Move Between Gmail's New Tabs with Keyboard Shortcuts

Gmail's new interface may be a bit controversial, but in traditional Gmail fashion, it's got a lot of shortcuts and tricks built-in. Here are a few you might want to know.

Once you enable the new interface (that is, if you've decided to keep it), Gmail will actually try to "teach" you most of its shortcuts through popups as you navigate it for the first time. For example, you can change which tabs show up by clicking the plus sign, or you can drag and drop messages between tabs or right-click and choose "move to tab").

What you may not have seen, though, are the new keyboard shortcuts:

Go to the next tab with `Go to the previous tab with ~You can also access these new "Categories" from the sidebar, and filter messages into them from Gmail's Create Filter dialog. Hit the link below to see everything you can do with the new interface, courtesy of Google Operating System.

Capacitive-Touch Arduino Keyboard Piano

You'll first want to collect all of the parts you will need for the project:

• An Arduino (or Arduino-compatible) microcontroller board.
• Any Arduino board should work: Uno, Leonardo, Mega, Pro Mini, etc.
• Eight 2.2 Megaohm (2.2 MO) resistors
• Anywhere between 1 MO and 4.7 MO should work
• You need one resistor per piano key
• A 2.2 MO resistor has a color code of Red-Red-Green or Red-Red-Black-Yellow
• A piezo buzzer
• Some spare wires or jumper cables
• Aluminum foil
• A foot or two should do
• Tape
• A surface to tape your keys to
• We used a scrap piece of cardboard, but it can be anything you like, even the tabletop itself!

Equipment that you may need:

• Soldering iron and solder
• You can probably get by without an iron by wrapping wires together instead of soldering, but the connection will not be as reliable
• Scissors to cut aluminum foil and tape

It's a great Android keyboard, and more than worth $2. It's been on sale for a few days now to celebrate the addition of three more colorful keyboard themes to the app, so the half-price offer could expire at any time. Add Custom Backlighting to Your Keyboard

A lot of nice gaming keyboards come with backlit keys, but you don't get any say over the color of the light. Some don't even let you make fine-grained adjustments to brightness. Luckily, it is possible to make some alterations on your own.

José Faria discussed adding custom lighting to his Razer BlackWidow Ultimate keyboard at his blog, cocasdaneve. The keyboard came with blue lights that he didn't really care for, and the included software only offered a few limited brightness settings. The easy part was replacing the blue LED's with store-bought 3mm white ones. It seems like the BlackWidow's LED's popped out without much fuss, but some keyboards might require you to take out a few boards and resolder the lights. Personally, I'd want my number keys, function keys, and letter keys to use different colored lights, but you can customize it however you wish.

José then proceeded to build his own controller into the keyboard to adjust the keys' brightness based on ambient light. The process is pretty complicated, and involves patching in a custom AVR chip, but he includes all the code and some diagrams in the blog post. If you're brave enough to try it yourself, be sure to check it out. If not, at least enjoy the video of his completed masterpiece.

Re: Microsoft may be preparing LED Screen Keyboard

Microsoft may be preparing LED Screen Keyboard
patent Microsoft LED keyboard
A few years back there was news of a fancy keyboard that had configurable keys using OLED display screens that were built into each and every key. Those keyboards were designed by a Russian design studio called Art Lebedev and the keyboard dubbed ‘Optimus Maximus’ would have a great hit were it not for the ridiculous price tag of $2068.

Now however, Microsoft has filed for a patent that could offer similar functions for a lot less money. The company’s “interactive keyboard with a viewable display” was submitted as a patent 2 years ago in September. The patent was then published this year on the 22nd of March. The patent came along with a second supporting patent which would offer the option of “multiple different key arrangements”.
The difference between this prospective device and the ‘Optimus Maximus’ is that the Microsoft version uses just one screen which will be below the partially transparent keyboard. This however, poses another problem in the viewing angle of the keys since they will be placed underneath the mechanical buttons, we can only assume that in order to have a clear view of what button you are pressing, you would have to look directly at it from the top. On the contrary, if Microsoft already does have a solution for that particular problem, this amazing device might be just what we need to tide us over until latency issues for haptic touch screen keyboards have been resolved.
